Brown Butter Cookies: The Ultimate Cookie Recipe for All Occasions

Super simple but SO good. I like them because they seem to be something that everyone is happy with.

Prep Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour 40 minutes
Yield: 40 cookies

Ingredients:

  • 15 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg white, lightly beaten
  • ⅓ cup sanding sugar

Instructions:

  1. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Continue cooking, stirring constantly, until it turns deep golden brown (about 11 minutes). Immediately transfer the butter to a large bowl and let it cool to room temperature (around 10 minutes). Then, stir in the vanilla extract.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, and salt. Gradually mix these dry ingredients into the butter mixture until well combined. Shape the dough into a ball, and then form it into a 14-inch-long log (about 1 1/2 inches in diameter). Wrap the log in parchment paper and refrigerate until firm, which should take about 1-2 hours.
  3. Once the dough is firm, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Brush the dough log with the lightly beaten egg white and roll it in sanding sugar. Slice the log into 3/8-inch rounds and place them on parchment-lined baking sheets.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until the cookies are light brown and firm, which should take about 15 to 17 minutes. Allow the cookies to cool completely on the baking sheets placed on wire racks.

Baker’s Notes:

  • The key to these cookies is the browned butter, which gives them a rich, nutty flavor. Make sure to watch the butter closely as it browns to prevent burning.
  • Sanding sugar adds a delightful crunch to the cookies, but if you don’t have it on hand, coarse sugar or even regular granulated sugar can be used as a substitute.

There you have it – Brown Butter Cookies that are sure to impress. Whether you’re making them for a special occasion or just as a treat for yourself, these cookies are guaranteed to be a hit. Enjoy the baking process and the even better eating process! Can’t wait to hear how they turn out for you!
